At BedRock we value our customers and focus on doing the right things right and always striving to do sustainable business. With the backing of TWK Agri (Pty) Ltd and all its resources in terms of mills and plantations, BedRock is one of a kind in the South African dunnage market.


Strategically, dunnage fulfils a crucial role in BedRock’s value chain it creates an additional market for timber outside our traditional mining markets. Dunnage has a variety of uses – specifically with shipping and trucking, containers and the steel industry. It is mainly used as hull protection, to lift cargo off the floor and to prevent water from coming into contact with the cargo. Dunnage is also used as a spacer to separate layers of steel/products for easy storing, loading or unloading, and for transporting.


Some of the loyal customers of 10 years or more are Bidfreight Port Operations, Pro Roof, SA Steel Mill and Uni-Span to name a few. With our strategically placed sawmills and that we can combine loads with our mining support products, together with our production and logistics capacity, we take pride in providing our customers with fast, efficient service.

TWK has shares in Protea Versoolwerke Ermelo (Pty) Ltd with a retreading plant in Ermelo and Kimberley as well as Six retail branches in Piet Retief, Ermelo, Middelburg, Vryheid, Kimberley and Gauteng.

The Protea Tyres Group’s footprint spreads over Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Northern Cape. The group is a leading supplier of tyres and tyre services.

Our core business is quality manufacturing of application-specific retreads and promoting and implementing cost per kilometre (CPK) systems for all end-users.

The group is also a leading supplier in the retail sector with branches in Ermelo, Piet Retief, Middelburg, Vryheid, Kimberley, Komatipoort and Gauteng. With franchise brands like Bandag, Continental, Dunlop and Battery Centre, we strive to provide an excellent service to a diversified customer base.​

The industry has changed its focus to become more customer-driven. We also believe in a contractual and not a transactional type of relationship with the end-user to ensure a long-term relationship.


Although the price is always a factor when choosing a tyre supplier, cost savings will be achieved by making use of the services of a good tyre supplier and retreader and initiating a sound tyre maintenance programme.


Retreading Factories and Wholesale

Protea Versoolwerke Ermelo was established in 1964 as one of the first Bandag franchises. Since 2001, we are part of the TWK Group with a footprint throughout South Africa.  We have received numerous awards from Bandag SA and other tyre suppliers for outstanding service and quality.

Our retreaded products have the SABS mark of approval and a Bandag Quality Audit Certification.

Ermelo (capacity 5 000 truck tyres per month) and Kimberley (capacity 2 500 tyres per month) distribute to a network of retailers and end-users across Mpumalanga, KZN, Limpopo, Northern Cape and Gauteng.

Protea Tyres believes in saving the customer money. We can provide the following services to optimise tyre life and even save on fuel costs:

  • Scrap tyre analysis

  • Surveys and road surveys

  • Load studies

  • Test tyres

  • Driver training

  • Truck wheel balancing

  • Truck wheel alignment

  • Computerised programmes: Profleet and Prowheel

The turnaround time for your retreads will be seven working days.

Services that can be expected will include:

  • Pick-up and delivery of tyres for repairs and retreading

  • Ongoing inflation and maintenance advice

  • Tyre-related studies as requested

  • “Urgent attention” tyre survey

  • We buy back well-maintained local casings including Dunlop, Goodyear, Continental and Michelin.

Breakdown Services

Protea has access to a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week breakdown service countrywide.

We primarily make use of the Bandag ETA nationwide facilities but can provide the same through Dunlop, Continental and other suppliers to ensure prompt nationwide service and the advantage of having a fixed cost.


Retailers

Our retail branches are Best Drive (Ermelo) and Dunlop accredited dealers (Piet Retief, Middelburg and Vryheid), and a Battery Centre franchise in Ermelo. Our aim is to give the most comprehensive service to our customers.


We are suppliers of leading brand products – Continental, Dunlop, Michelin, BF Goodrich, Good Year and SABS-approved new import tyres. The Battery Centre supplies Raylite and Exide batteries. The fitment centres specialise in shock absorbers, exhausts, tow bars, mag wheels, wheel alignment and balancing.

Arrowfeeds manufactures a comprehensive series of balanced animal feeds. Feed is one of the most important and determining factors for successful livestock farming. Livestock can only reach its full production potential if optimal feed requirements are met. Saving on the cost of feed always results in lower-quality produce.

Arrowfeeds covers the entire spectrum of feed requirements namely:

TWK Logistics

The TWK Logistics team identified the need to formulate a comprehensive logistics strategy that was aligned to the group’s overall business strategy and encompassed all movements – from the forest/fields to the final destination. This strategy included a multitude of options such as rail, owned fleet, outsourced fleet and a dedicated contracted fleet.

Putting a TMS platform in the TWK ecosystem gives TWK leadership and shareholders peace of mind that the lowest cost plan is deployed every day based on the resources available to TWK. In the meantime, the TWK Logistics team has access to much more information and data than they would ever have had before.
