Derick started his career with the Government Mining Engineer after graduating from Pretoria University in 1982. He gained valuable experience in all disciplines of mining, including a Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency and joined the Chamber of Mines in 1988. During this time he obtained a Masters in Commerce from the Rand Afrikaans University in 1990.
Furthering his career in the mining supply industry he joined African Explosives (AEL) in 1991, focussing on supply contracts and marketing, both locally and internationally. In 1997 he joined global pulp and paper company, Sappi, as the General Manager of their mining support business and served as executive director on the board of Sappi Timber Industries.
Following Sappi’s divestment from timber manufacturing, he led a management buy-out of Sappi Mining Timber in 2000. Leading a carefully selected team and, forming sustainable relationships with prominent mining houses and business partners, the company grew to be the leader in the supply of timber-based underground mining support products and support solutions to the gold and platinum industries. After the formation of BedRock in 2008 he assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer, primarily responsible for company strategy and future growth.
